I managed to watch a couple of movies this weekend, one of which was in a real theater! (I don’t get out to theaters much.)
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
The Fifth Element is one of my favorite science fiction movies. Made by the same writer/director, Valerian takes the scope of The Fifth Element and blows it up times a thousand. Sadly, the epic world building and impressive costumes/makeup were dragged down a bit by a rather formulaic “someone stole something now we have to get it back” story, with a pretty unbelievable love side story thrown in. I make it sound horrible, but I did enjoy myself throughout the entire film.
So, if I had to pick between TFE or Valerian to watch, I’d probably pick TFE most of the time, but Valerian is definitely worth picking up a copy on Blu-ray when it comes out. On a random scale I just made up, I’d give Valerian a B-.
Kong: Skull Island
I’ve never been a huge Kong fan, though this one had me interested, so I finally got around to renting it yesterday. I would say the monster action was really enjoyable, but the hard headed revenge story was a bit silly given the overall circumstances the characters found themselves in. The movie also moves with such a ferocious pace that you don’t really have an opportunity to get to know any character for any length of time anyway, and there are so many characters to begin with.
All that said, I did like it overall, though I’m not sure if it’s a buy at current full price. Skull Island managed to finally warm me to Kong, so that’s something. The stinger after the end credits made everything worth it, though I can’t say without spoiling it. I’d give it a C+ for now, with the hopes it will go up with future viewings. I don’t necessarily need to own it, but I’d like to watch it a few more times.
