So before I moved back, M signed me up for a beginning oil painting class at a local community college as a birthday present. I had never tried oils before. I’d heard they were infinitely better than acrylics, but were also infinitely more messy as well.
This is my first attempt as it stands today. I’m pretty proud of it, though there are many things I would have done differently had I not been guided in a particular direction when setting up the canvas. That said, it’s definitely the longest I’ve ever worked on a single painting. I’d say I’m about three quarters finished as of today. I plan to enter it into the college’s summer art show in a few weeks.
Working in oil is weird to me, because the paint doesn’t dry quickly. This is great for blending, but not so much for trying to put paint on top of paint. I’m sure there’s something I’m missing, but I’ll learn better habits the more I work and experiment with it.
