Plein air painting! I took my makeshift acrylic cigar box setup to Florida in hopes of spending some time trying out the plein air lifestyle. I’m happy to report it went rather well!
M and I went out to Caladesi island on Sunday to enjoy an afternoon of sun and surf. When I wasn’t in the water, I was in my beach chair, painting the scene laid out before me. It wasn’t the most organized setup, but it worked well enough to get something down on canvas.
When we were done with the beach, we headed back up to the dock area where I quickly painted another panel. The clouds broke apart in the gulf view, so I wanted to try and capture them from the other side of the island.
I’m pretty happy with the way these panels came out. I would have loved to use my new oil setup, but there was no way I was going to drag everything down to Florida for an afternoon. My cigar box setup did the trick though. I think I’ll keep it with me for use on shorter trips where I know I can only get out for an hour or two.
